Luang Prabang

It's been overcast and pretty chilly the last 2 days here in Laos. Actually in long pants today. It has rained every day we have been here too. Kind of nice after the sweltering of Thailand. Not much to report. This is a pretty sleepy town. We made it up to the high point of the city yesterday and got some great views and saw more wats and buddhas. Got a good pic of a monk studying up there as well and hang out with some monkeys for a little while. We are going on a hike across the river today if the weather holds up. Tomorrow we leave via bus for Veng Viang, a little further south. We plan on floating down the river in tubes for a day to see the caves and waterfalls, but if it stays this chilly, we may not be able to. Leaving on Monday from Vientiane and flying to Hanoi. It will be our first flight over here and will be on Vietnam Airlines. It all sounds really safe, but should be interesting nonetheless.

Love the hammer and sickle shirt!! People might look at you a little crazy though when you come back to the states... :) Looks like a nice relaxing time for you guys. Enjoy the interesting odors on the plane!!

Nice picture of the random Buddist? Just sneaking up behind monks, taking pictures and running off - is that it?

I guess he can't run too fast in those flip flops.

A friend of mine from work is going to Hanoi over Christmas with his wife, then to Luang Prabang. Can you guys recommend anything else about the place?

That was pretty much exactly how it went down, Wachter. We will be in Hanoi next week so should be able to offer some tips on it. As far as Luang Prabang, it is a really chill place with not all that much going on. Really beautiful with some great restaurants. We were eating really well for about $10/day. Definitley check out the night market as there are some unusual wares being peddled. Not all the same recycled crap we saw all over Thailand. And tell them to book something in advance for sure, if they haven't. X-Mas isn't very big with the locals, but all the European tourists invade around the holidays.
