We can find only one slow computer in town so far so no pics today. We are in Huay Xai, Laos for the day and night and will be leaving tomorrow early on a boat down the Mekong to Luang Prabang. It should be about a 9 hour trip. Hopefully we find better technology there.

Within the framework of our generation's history, it sounds funny that you guys are casually taking a boat down the Mekong.
How have your digestive systems been dealing with the food situation?? I'm sure your selections are vastly different from thoses at Ophelia's!!
How are you finding lodging? Jenn, did you know about some of the places you have stayed, or have they been chosen after your arrival?
Stay safe and well!

It is a little strange to think that we took a boat down the Mekong... trust me, we thought about that all day. There is really nothing there - just jungle and hill tribe villages, completely untouched by anything. There is no commerce, no ugly factories, just miles and miles of beautiful scenery. i really can't imagine a setting as peaceful as that being used in war. But nonetheless, it was an amazing trip - very fun and relaxing. Our digestive systems are fine - especially now that we're in Laos. French colonialism left behind all kinds of fantastic food, so we are enjoying a nice break from the rice and noodles. We haven't had much of a problem at all with food or water (knock on wood)! We pretty much wing it everywhere we go go - we get online and use our guidebooks for recommandations on where to stay, but some of the best that we have found, we just stumbled upon while exploring. We usually spend about 12-16 dollars per night, and we have enjoyed quite a few luxuries that most backpackers don't get - air conditioning, our own bathroom, and sometimes even a tv! We're so spoiled. :)
